How Pull Off Edgy Chic Style as a Wedding Guest

Adding Attitude to an All American Wedding

Stephanie in Rent the Runway at Naval Academy Wedding

The Borrowed Babes love to go to weddings! It is the perfect time to rent or borrow a dress or item of clothing we don't always have the opportunity to wear AND to have fun with friends and family. A few weekends ago we went on another #BorrowedAdventure to Annapolis, Maryland for a fabulous weekend of wedding fun. Have you ever been to visit Annapolis, Maryland? If you haven't add it to your list of places you MUST visit. It is amazing! Great food, great drinks, great people, great scenery, great men! ;-) (I may be partial...my husband is a United States Naval Academy Graduate so I am partial to the people. :-))

The most exciting thing for me having a spouse that attended the academy is the opportunity to attend weddings in the chapel. They are gorgeous! We've been fortunate enough to attend a handful of events there and trust me, it never gets old. I always try to plan my attire based around what uniform my husband will be wearing when we attend a Navy wedding. The color and time of year will help me determine what style and colors I wear. (No one wants to be twinning with their husband at a wedding...awkward.) This particular wedding required "Service Dress Blues" which oddly enough are actually black. Listen, I know it is just a name but for you non-military spouses figuring out what uniform is what and who is who and what is up and what is down with all the acronyms can sometimes be confusing. Long story, short SDB's are my favorite uniform because they are black and look similar to a tux and look great on everyone.

I took the opportunity to rough up my ensemble. I typically go for something preppy to match the All American vibe of a uniform but decided to think outside the box this week. As usual, basically whole ensemble is from Rent the Runway. Kimberly and I both have the Unlimited subscription and have never once regretted purchasing that option. It is KILLER!

We, just like everyone else, constantly scroll through Instagram to help come up with ideas when we are in a fashion rut. One afternoon I came across this amazing Monique Lhuillier gown and KNEW I needed to have it in my life and thought this wedding would be the perfect fit.

Wedding Guest Style

How amazing is this ML Floral Gown? The high-low cut gives it a nice sass that you can't always achieve from a full length gown. The floral print adds some feminine flair, but the darker tones give it more edge and less girly feels.

I mean seriously...you need this in your life. You can also find this gown for purchase at Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus if you just love it so much you need to keep it forever and ever amen. Once I saw that it was available from RTR, I knew I had to secure my rental ASAP. - Helpful tip: If you find something amazing on Rent the Runway or Rent, Frock, Repeat...do not wait until the weekend before your event to try and secure the reservation. That lovely gem will be totally unavailable. I have been known to put reservations down as far as 3 months in advance to ensure my size and preference is available. Kimberly and I will be putting together a list of helpful tips to help you navigate Rent the Runway soon so check back for those details.

Rent Your Dress and Accessories

The next item to tackle was the shoes and accessories. I'll be honest...I was on the fence about this. I couldn't decide if I wanted to classic, edgy, preppy or fancy...so I just did what I always do when I can't make a decision. I flip open my RTR app on my phone and browse by availability...and much to my lucky eyes this BRAND NEW REBECCA MINKOFF studded leather jacket was available through my Unlimited option. I HIT SEND NOW. First of all, we LOVE REBECCA MINKOFF so I was already partial. But seriously, this jacket is amazing. It was also BRAND SPANKING NEW. It came to me with tags on and that delicious new leather smell. #Heaven

Shop the Look

Once RTR confirmed the shipment of my jacket I moved on to the rest of the accouterments. Since my Love for Rebecca Minkoff knows no bounds I settled on yet another Leo clutch. Why? Because sparkles. And Purple. And Sparkly Purple. So easy decision. The Leo Clutch is a perfect size and always carries well. Super affordable to purchase outright as well as rent. AND y'all as of right now there is a #SAMPLESALE on the Rebecca Minkoff site. Click here to shop now but it ends ASAP so grabs your items while you can.

For accessories, less is more. The shoes, jacket, and dress all have so much going on that jewelry needed to be simple and complimentary. I opted to go with this awesome pair of Loren Hope studs from my latest #Rocksbox shipment. If you have't tried, Rocksbox get with it. They are amazing. It is great to be able to try new jewelry without buying it first. And the best part is, if you find a piece you love you can totally buy it and keep it. If you'd like to try Rocksbox FOR FREE courtesy of The Borrowed Babes click here to sign up and enter code "theborrowedbabesxoxo" - This will allow you to get your subscription FREE for the first month. Hello, can't beat that deal!
